Saint Bartholomew altarpiece from Cubells
This piece is representative of the work of the Lleida school in around 1400. Even though it has not survived wholly intact, it is comprised of four historical reliefs telling the legend of Saint Bartholomew, who was a popular subject of worship in Catalonia during the Middle Ages. At the centre of the image, Saint Bartholomew is reclining on a pedestal which depicts the Man of Sorrows with Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist. Nine of the twelve apostles, each identified by its attribute, are depicted on the bench or predella.
