Pietà Altarpiece
This is one of the most important works built in La Seu d’Urgell in the mid-sixteenth century. It is a Renaissance-style altarpiece made by the sculptor Jeroni Xanxo, who worked between 1537 and 1575. It was painted and gilded later, in 1573, by Antoni Peitaví, a painter from Toulouse living in Perpignan, and Miquel Verdaguer. The freestanding sculpture of the Virgin of the Pietà with dead Christ on her lap is at the centre of the altarpiece’s composition.
